Fort Worth, Texas - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, announced a temporary emergency closure on parts of Lake O' the Pines due to ongoing fire suppression operations in the area. The closure is necessary to ensure the safety of the Texas Forest Service aircraft "skimming" the lake surface to refill their water tanks, as well as the safety of the boating public during these operations. Fort Worth, Texas - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District announces the closure of Jim Hogg boat ramp at Lake Georgetown due to drought conditions. Low water levels have made it unsafe for people to launch most watercraft. Only vessels that can be hand carried such as canoes and kayaks can still be launched. Fort Worth, Texas - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District at Waco Lake announces the fire that broke out August 23 between Airport Road and the Waco Lake Dam is more than 95 percent contained. Fort Worth, Texas - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District announce the closure of Airport Beach Park at Waco Lake due to drought conditions. The lack of rainfall in central Texas has Waco Lake currently at 5.25 feet below normal pool. Due to the low levels Airport Beach Park is not a safe swimming area. Officials at the Corps recommend the front beach at Twin Bridges which is still open and available for use, and encourage all visitors to use this designated swim area. Fort Worth, Texas - U.S. Army Corps of Engineer's Fort Worth District recently completed periodic inspections on the Federal levee system in Fort Worth, resulting in eight levees rated unacceptable and two minimally acceptable. This inspection did not identify conditions that would impact performance of the Fort Worth Floodway levee systems during the passage of the current FEMA Base Flood, which is commonly referred to as the 100-year flood. FORT WORTH, Texas - The Memorial Day weekend initiates a spike in visitation at U.S. Army Corps of Engineer lakes which runs through the Labor Day weekend. With this increase in visitation also comes an increase in fatalities. Statistics maintained by the Fort Worth District show that there have been 10 fatalities at area lakes so far this year. There were also seven fatalities during the same period last year. But the staggering figure in the minds of Corps leadership is the average of 32 fatalities at District lakes over the past three years.Read more of CESWF-PA-11-27...

FORT WORTH, Texas - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District has finalized its winter closure plan including operational changes to reduce costs while maintaining as much winter recreational opportunities as possible. The changes are being implemented to reduce operating costs of recreation areas when usage is typically very light. The changes in operations include reductions in open recreational facilities during the winter months at Waco Lake. FORT WORTH, Texas - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Sam Rayburn Lake will close Recreation Road 255 on different nights over the next several months in order to perform routine maintenance on their flood gates. Closing RR255 is necessary for the removal and replacement of the gates. The highway will be closed between the Twin Dikes Public Boat Ramp and the entrance of Ebenezer Park with the third closure scheduled May 25 at 10 p.m. for approximately five hours. FORT WORTH, Texas - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, Grapevine Lake Office, will continue in its efforts to provide a sustainable and enjoyable hunting experience to the public for the 2011 – 2012 hunting season. A new hog trapping program will be implemented as an added effort to control the feral hog population, however the majority of guidelines for the hunting permits will remain the same as in 2010 – 2011. FORT WORTH, Texas - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District at Lake O' the Pines will be conducting de-watering operations of the stilling basin/spillway area beginning May 9 through approximately May 13. During this operation a temporary coffer dam will be built downstream to prevent water in Big Cypress Creek from flowing back into the basin. FORT WORTH, Texas - U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District officials are preparing for possible closure of all Corps-operated campgrounds and day-use parks at the 25 lakes operated by the District in Texas if the potential shutdown of the federal government goes into effect. FORT WORTH, Texas - The New Mexico Environmental Department issued a permit to the Army in December 2005 defining the requirements necessary for the cleanup of environmental contamination, munitions and explosives at Fort Wingate Depot Activity before property can be transferred to the Department of the Interior. The permit requires extensive consultation with the Pueblo of Zuni and the Navajo Nations as the tribes will ultimately receive any land the Army transfers to DOI.
